1. Tone
- As slim as I am, there are certain areas of my body I feel needs to be toned. E.g. the tummy!
2. Strength
- With the exception of decent stamina (I do run occasionally), I have never been physically strong. My arms, in particular, are really weak. I remember the days I struggled to pass my inclined pull-ups and sit-ups. And guess what? I have never successfully done a push-up in my life. I used to 'bluff' my way through PE lessons all the time. Oops. But I really do want to build more power and be in control of my body's abilities.
3. Overall wellness
- Gym memberships typically offer unlimited classes, which include yoga, zumba, pilates, kickboxing etc. Besides being able to learn a new sport, you also attain a sense of self-satisfaction and wellness in the process. Yoga, for instance, is well known for helping an individual achieve greater inner peace and agility.
Clearly, exercising in the park alone would not help me achieve the objectives above mentioned. I needed access to gym equipment and well-trained instructors to do that!
A brief summary of the gyms I visited:
Virgin Active

Located at 1 Raffles Place, Virgin Active is one of the most upmarket and modern gyms around. The gym boasts the latest cutting-edge equipment and tailored services. For instance, customers can book seasonal massage, facial and even pedicure services at the gym for free. There are also steam rooms, ice rooms, a foot bath area, and even a salt-scented room for you to relax and rejuvenate after a good workout. They even have sleep pods!
Gym attired (including socks) are provided, and washrooms come complete with shampoo, soap and hair conditioner. It's perfect for those in the CBD area who want to head to the gym during lunch hours or after work, as you barely have to bring anything along with you!
I attended a Zumba + Weights class over there, and it was good. I liked that I could train my arms and sweat it out, all in 1 lesson!

The cons are that it only has 1 outlet, which makes it inconvenient for me, and that the membership is a little too pricey for me.
True Fitness

Visited the Tampines outlet on a weekday, and I like that it was pretty quiet. Understood from the consultant that it's not very crowded on weekends either, probably due to its location in the heartlands. It's nice to work out without having to queue for machines or shower rooms.
Absolutely loved the Zumba class there! The instructor was really enthusiastic and welcoming, and I felt totally at ease even though it was my first time learning the dance. :)
The gym does not provide workout attire, but offers neck and bath towels. Gym equipment and toilet facilities are a little older and shabbier, and I did not really fancy the purple lighting in the area.
I think True Fitness has around 8 facilities island-wide, so it's quite accessible.
Membership is around $130/month.
Fitness First

The Raffles Quay outlet was very crowded when I went on a Tuesday afternoon. Most clients of that outlet are working professionals in the CBD area, so it's expected. My consultant told me that the off-peak periods on weekdays are from 2pm - 6pm. Good to take note if you want to visit a gym in town on a weekday!
Fitness First has two types of outlets: Platinum and Normal. Platinum outlets provide gym attire (without socks) while the Normal outlets do not. Most of their facilities are Platinum outlets though.
I ran on the treadmill to the most amazing view:
However, the consultant was SO pushy that I immediately eliminated this place out of my consideration set. Excessively pushy salespeople are a huge turn-off for me because it screams poor service. In a nutshell, that salesperson was calling and messaging me excessively, urging me to sign up for the membership. When I did not read his text within 30 minutes, he would send another text prompting my reply. It's just pretty ridiculous.
Membership is around $150/month.
Amore Fitness
I eventually signed up with Amore Fitness! Why? I love that it's a girl-dominated gym, which makes me feel more comfortable and at ease working out. The service at the Tampines One outlet was also great, as I was greeted with smiles and a warm welcome when I attended the trial session.
The Tampines outlet also boasts a swimming pool, which is an added bonus for me, since I have intentions of learning swimming! (Yeah I can't exactly swim... Hahaha) The water in the pool is at 1.2m throughout, making it safe for me to figure out and practise swimming on my own. :)

More importantly, the class timings were well suited to my schedule. They have Zumba and Powerpump lessons (which are of my interest) on Tuesday, which happens to be my off-day.
Membership is around $130/month.
I hope this post helps any of you who are looking to sign up for a gym membership! Stay fit and stay happy.
<3,
Jit
